Summer by Equinus Summer by Equinus
I decided my girls needed some attention, especially Cora and Pavia, who really don't get drawn enough by me! :aww: So, I went reference hunting, and it all sorta started out when I found a picture that I used for the background as reference. I could just picture three happy mares taking a happy splash through the water! :XD:

So here we are! Cora, Trav and Pavia all cooling off in the lake from the summer heat! :love: I just realised that I flipped the image to get their markings right, and forgot to flip them back... so technically only Trav's markings are correct! :lmao: Oh what a bright spark I am! :shakefish: I originally hated this picture, but just carried on with it anyway! :D Then I enjoyed it when I was shading, and then hated it when I did the background! :shrug: Please don't shoot it down, my backgrounds have become so rusty, I'm quite embarrassed! :blush: And I used *Aomori's water splash tutorial, which started out well until PS died and I'd forgotten to save! :ohnoes: So I redid it, and while the splashes aren't fantastic, I'm still fairly happy with them! ^^;

But never mind! Thanks for looking, all comments and faves are greatly appreciated! :heart:

Gosh Dana, I dunno if I've ever told you this before, but you're probably the ONE person I know on DA who can made pre-made grass brushes actually look GOOD. I LOVE your meadow scenes! They're soo... lush! It's so cool :D Plus, your characters are so vibrant and delightful. It's like a playful awesome photoshoot :heart:

Not sure if you were asking for critique or not, but since you're my friend and because I love yuh, I'm giving you some anyway. Plus I'm pretty sure you can handle it XD. lol.

This is some advice I've given a lot of my friends here over the years, including Michelle and Samantha (=fictionist). You've got some really good motion and flow going with the mane and tail, as well as some awesome textures :) The next step would be to start working outside of the confines of your line art, and adding little individual stands and wisps. Hair plays in funny random ways, so don't be afraid to make a little random crazy squiggle from time to time :aww:.

Next would be the depth of field :D. Everything looks great until you get to the mountains and the clouds. Parts of the clouds look a little bit sharper than the mountains. A quick fix to that would just be to put a quick Gaussian blur on your clouds layer. :meow:

And lastly, I'm going to let you in on an awesome trick with water. I'm not sure if it would work well in this picture [it's sometimes hit and miss] but here you go anyway:
1st, take either a stock of water ripples/reflections OR grab some water brushes like these: [link]
2nd, place either the texture or the brush (big enough to fill the desired area, color white) on a new layer above your painted water.
3rd, put the layer on overlay, multiply, screen, or soft light (depending on which looks best). Play with opacity and sometimes a Gaussian blur.
End: easy realistic water :D

Thanks for teh crit Cricks! :tighthug: What you've said is super helpful! :nod: Hehe I'm really not good with painting brushes and trees or any kind of foliage, that's why I'm so glad we have brushes. ^^; So I'm glad they don't look too bad! ;P
I get what you're saying about the mane and tails, adding random wisps of hair. It's something I always see, and love, but always forget! :roll: But I will remember for my future works! :D I'll also remember the depth of field, I'm such a freak about it when it comes to photography that I should be a freak when it comes to art! Usually I do blur the background a bit, altho this one I didn't, and looking at it, I think you're right, it'd work with this background cus it's so detailed. Eeeeeeek! Thank you for those brushes! :love: The ones I have now are a little uninspiring, but those are fantastic! I'm totally gonna get them and play! :w00t:
Thank you so much! Now I want to draw and put it all into play! :icongwomp: :heart:

Wow, Dana! This is beautiful! :faint: It is great to see these 3 pretty gals all in one drawing together! :giggle:

I really love the way you drew their poses, and it really brings each of them out in their own way. :nod: :love: I really like how Trav is in the middle, too. She is so gorgeous! :faint: I love her pretty smile and her colors and markings. :heart: Cora looks gorgeous, with her pretty purple markings and her gorgeous mane and tail. And Pavia looks amazing with her gorgeous green eyes! :faint: Their expressions are so pretty, and you can tell how much fun they are having! :lol: :D The shading and highlights bring out their muscles very well, and their manes and tails are so pretty, with a shine to them that is just shiny enough. :D I really like the way you did their reflections, too, and they look so perfect! :wow: Which brings me to the water. The water looks fantastic, with the ripples and reflections, of both the characters and the sky. :aww: The mountains in the background look fanastic, too! I love the detail you put into them, with all of the shading and the highlights on the top. :nod: I also really love that pretty blue sky and the single big cloud. :love:

Dana, I really love this one! :glomp: I think you should be very proud of it, and how amazing you made all of these girlies look! It is great to see them all together! :love: :tighthug:
