Artist's Comments

Trav and Russo had been running through the northern plains of Anrastonia all morning. Reggie had left for an outing with some of the other stallions in the herd, Amante leading them on a journal down to Chynn Sea for a few days to search for new grazing lands. So Russo had stayed behind to spend some quality time with his best friend. They spent hours playing in Lake Iye, and playing hide 'n seek in the forests of Iye. They found a lone apple tree, something very rare in Anrastonia, and they decided to have a lunch break. Russo, being the adventurous and somewhat show-off stallion that he is, decided his lunch had to include an apple. Trav merrily grazed on the sweet grass, while watching Russo totter around on his hind legs, desperate for an apple...
"You know you could survive on grass alone, right? Apples aren't an essential!" Trav joked as she watched her best friend look somewhat foolish as he craned his neck higher. Russo rolled his eyes, nearling losing his balance but steadied himself.
"Yes, but it's so shiny. I've gotta have that one!"

Hehe I had to put a story to this, seeing as it was my imagination that inspired this! :giggle: I haven't draw these two in ages, especially dear Russo! :aww: So I fought through the art block and finished this! And I had lots of fun doing those clouds, I'm enjoying them more and more! :XD: Many thanks to Becca aka *eldery for helping me with this!

Your backgrounds never cease to amaze me. I can practically hear the birds singing. Looking through your work, that is something I very much admire about you. It's very apparent you know a thing or two about landscapes ;).

My first critique would be regarding those brushes. You've got the photoshop grass brush, a butterfly brush, the photoshop leaf brush, and perhaps those flowers(?). And I might be missing a few. They are effective to a degree, but judging by how those horses are beautifully shaded, I think you can do better! For starters, I would suggest using a small brush on about 75% hardness and stroking in a few random blades here and there. That way the grass won't look so uniform. You can also set your smudge tool to the grass brush to really make those blades fly. With the butterflies, they seem fairly simple. Try drawing a few. Rotate some. They're bunched together and all at the same moment in fluttering those wings. With the leaves, those are easy to disguise. Setting a brush to "scatter" on a small size and lightly going over areas will make it look less brushy. I'd love to see what you are capable of when brushes aren't heavily used!

Now I'm about to share a little trick I recently figured out. Skin is reflective, and it can really bring out an image to add colors from the surroundings on the skin. What I do is shade everything normally, then go back and look at the image and ask, "what would reflect?" ... Those butterflies look like they're giving off a soft glow and could possibly be a light source. The bright green grass on the lower legs and hooves. Some of the flowers that are closer to the equines. All of those colors can be applied :). I make a new layer and set it to "opacity" then use the eyedropper to grab the color. Then I just brush the color over the reflecting area and baaam. Just something to try out if you feel up to it.

Whew. Long critique! I hope that didn't overwhelm you ^^;. I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the future!

:D It's not that she's fearless, it's merely a sheer lack of self-preservation. :D

The closest thing I can imagine to the thrill of being on a horse that is clearing big fences at speed is zooming down an icy mountain slope on skis :giggle:
